COLUMBUS -- Police in northeast Nebraska responded to an accident Saturday evening.

The Columbus Police Department say their officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on October 16th at 9:37 p.m. at the intersection of 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue.

Officials say the Columbus Fire Engine was traveling eastbound on 23rd Street when it struck a 2012 GMC Sierra that was heading southbound on 3rd Avenue.

Police say that after the pickup was hit, it then struck a pedestrian that was standing at the southeast corner of the intersection.

Authorities say the fire engine was being driven for an emergency to an unrelated call for service, and it was determined that the pickup failed to stop for the southbound traffic light.

Officials say the pedestrian was a 32-year-old man from Columbus, and he was transported to the Columbus Community Hospital. The driver of the pickup was a 43-year-old male from Columbus, who was also transported to the Columbus Community Hospital.

It was stated that both men sustained serious injuries. The Columbus Fire Crew did not sustain any injuries.

The accident is under investigation.
