O'Neill gets ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day
O'NEILL, Neb. -- Since the beginning of the pandemic, the St. Patrick’s day parade is the first outdoor event of the year in O'Neill, bringing a huge boost in the economy’s recovery process. The event will last three days starting on March 17th.
O'Neill's Chamber of Commerce president, Lauri Havraneck, says that "People come in and stay in the motels, and the restaurants, so it is our first influx of tourism in the community for the year."
With the coronavirus still present in the “new normal,” the Irish community is taking serious prevention measures during the festival.
"We welcome people to wear a mask if that will make them feel more comfortable, social distancing, stay with your family groups", added Havraneck.
The 2019 flood and 2021 pandemic brought challenges to the community, but despite the difficult times, they stay positive.
"We turned the negative into a positive two years ago to help people out. COVID-19 was so new that people were afraid and we didn't know what was going to happen".
The festival is expecting to receive within 5,000-7,000 people. Lauri says that local businesses are ready to wear their green outfits to start the cultural celebration.
"There will be Irish drinks and food at the local restaurants so that the businesses will be painting and decorating their windows to show the Irish heritage even stronger".
The participation of local community partners has been essential in this event, and lots of activities are waiting for the public.
"At this point, we are going to have the painting of the shamrock, we are going to have the parade, all kinds of fun activities for all ages, and we would love to have all of you come and enjoy".
Although the CDC is warning caution in big gatherings, but says if you are planning to attend this event or others similar, remember to always keep your distance, and wear a mask at all times.
