While there are lots of names tied to the GOP’s 2022 governor’s race, one name carries more weight than most, if not all the others.
According to several party insiders, that’s Senator Deb Fischer.
It’s widely believed Fischer, who served two terms in the Legislature before winning her 2012 Senate race and re-election in 2018, is seriously considering a return to Lincoln—this time to the Governor’s mansion.
Fischer’s decision—so far no official comment from Team Fischer—arguably made more intriguing by her Saturday vote to acquit former President Donald Trump of inciting the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
Following her vote Fischer issued the following statement: “It remains true that Congress simply does not have the constitutional authority to impeach a former president. And rather than take its take time to hold hearings and assess all evidence, the House had a rushed impeachment process that denied President Trump due process. Accordingly, I voted to acquit President Trump. It is now time to come together and move forward.”
Jane Kleeb, the head of the Nebraska Democratic Party, immediately called Fischer a “coward” who did as she was told.
As for Fischer’s future Kleeb added this: “Sen. Fischer wants to run for governor in 2022, and there is no question that Nebraskans will remember that she continues to stand with Trump even as he incited a deadly mob that killed a police officer.”
If Fischer decides to run for governor, others said to be considering the race will likely stay home.
High on that list of possible candidates for governor is 2nd District Congressman Don Bacon.
