LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man has died in an accidental shooting at his Lincoln apartment, police there said.

The shooting happened Wednesday night, killing Ivan Messersmith, 21, of Grand Island, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

Police were called to Messersmith’s apartment after his girlfriend found him unconscious and not breathing with a gunshot wound to his head, Officer Luke Bonkiewicz said.

An investigation showed Messersmith was filming a video and manipulating the handgun when he accidentally shot himself, police said.

Messersmith was a freshman civil engineering major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
