LAKE MCCONAUGHY - Keystone-Lemoyne Fire and Rescue responded to two grass fires less than 30 minutes a part around Lake McConaughy Friday night. Both fires started because of fireworks, according to the department.

The first fire call of a grass fire on the north side of Lake Ogallala came in at 10:48 p.m.. The second grass fire was in the North Shore Lodge area and was called in at 11:15 p.m. Both were extinguished quickly.

The fire department has responded to three fireworks related fires this week.

Thousands of people have flocked to the two lakes in Keith County for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Vehicles trying to enter the state parks could be seen lined to the highway at the Martin Bay and Arthur Bay entrances.

Fire fighter Ralph Moul says the water levels in Lake McConaughy are dropping fast and "there are drop-offs all over the place." He says to make sure children are wearing life jackets.

He also reminds lake-goers fireworks and alcohol are prohibited at both Lake Mac and Lake Ogallala.

"We are extremely dry this year and have already responded to several fireworks related fires," Moul said in a statement on Facebook. "Please use common sense and play nice together while at this recreation area. We are all volunteers and we are here to help. Again, we are here to help and not get into arguments with people that call for our assistance."

He says don't burn yourself or your neighbor out with fireworks.
