NORFOLK - A Norfolk church is adapting to putting on worship services without having a congregation physically in attendance.

Our Savior Lutheran Church is among those who have transitioned to either online or televised worship services. The change comes after the church elected to follow guidelines put in place by the CDC and Governor Pete Ricketts.

"Early Sunday morning two weeks ago we had the idea that the CDC was changing its requirements, and it was going to be suggesting no more than ten people gather at a time," Pastor Lee Weander said. "We decided to go ahead with worship that Sunday morning, but then right away on Monday the CDC issued its recommendation, and we decided that Monday to both go online and team up with News Channel Nebraska to stream our services."

This past Sunday was the first time Our Savior put on a worship service without a congregation in the building, which provided quite the unique experience for Pastor Weander.

"That was about the most surreal moment of my life," Weander said. "It's weird preaching to a camera and trying to connect with people who are sitting at home, because ultimately communicating the gospel is about connecting with people, so it's a little more difficult, but it's something I'm trying to get used to."

Pastor Weander believes it's important for the church to continue putting together services for its congregation, as the good word can lift the community up during the difficulties the nation is facing.

"The church of God is bigger than a building, and that's the cool thing to me to see how God's people are acting and interacting with one another," Weander said. "If you know somebody who works in a nursing home or in the medical profession, tell them how much you appreciate all that they're doing."

"It's stressful for us, but some of the people in our society are experiencing incredible stress, so for us to pray for them and encourage them is an incredibly important thing for us to do," Weander said.

Our Savior's services can be seen on News Channel Nebraska every Sunday at 9 AM, or can be watched on their website as well.
