BEATRICE – Citing safety concerns, the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District Board has voted to ban blue rock and target shooting at all areas owned and operated by the NRD.

Complaints from visitors to lakes and recreation areas prompted the move.  The district has received reports of persons shooting toward occupied areas, leaving target debris and trash at local lakes.  NRD officials say reports of persons shooting into dams have become more common.

Damage to a concrete riser was recently discovered at the Wolf-Wildcat Wildlife Management Area.   Before that, damage was reported to an outlet pipe at the Clatonia Creek Wildlife Management Area, last year.

Lower Big Blue officials say discharge of firearms is prohibited at all NRD areas from June 1st to August 31st.   Hunting is allowed at the areas between September 1st to June 1st, unless restricted or banned.

Officials say hunting is not allowed within 100 yards of any public-use facility, picnic area, parking lot or boat ramp.
