NORFOLK, NE (News Channel Nebraska) -A Norfolk family is assessing the damage after a house fire broke out Thursday afternoon on South 6th Street.

Norfolk fire officials responded to a call around 12:40 pm that a house had caught on fire.  Lieutenant Bob Nelson says in a news release that initial crews encountered heavy smoke and moderate flames inside the house.

Nelson says the fire was an accident.  It started when a burner was accidentally turned on when the occupants were out of the house.  They returned to the fire.

Nelson says it took about 60 minutes for firefighters to overhaul the structure.  The property sustained about $45,000 of damage to the building and its contents.

There were no injuries.
