FAIRBURY - It's official - Fairbury's new pool and aquatic center will open on Saturday, May 25.
The city confirmed that news via email Friday. Fairbury's target for the pool opening has always been Memorial Day weekend. Ground was broken last June.
The entire project costs about $3.5 million. Development services director Laura Bedlan says the new pool should draw plenty of visitors from both in town and the surrounding communities.
"We're really excited to have it," Bedlan said. "We hope it'll help with the (Fairbury Waverbreakers) swim team a lot. We hope that it'll bring people into the community to enjoy our facilities. We also hope it'll be a big draw for local people."
The opening ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on the 25th with a ribbon cutting and speech from mayor Homer Ward. There'll also be a full tour, photo opportunities, a raffle and a speech by members of the Fairbury swim team. The pool will then be open for a public swim that afternoon.
The pool will be fully staffed for opening day. Concessions will also be running. Those that are interested in purchasing pool passes can do so at the Fairbury city clerk's office.
News Channel Nebraska will have full coverage of the grand opening.
