BEATRICE - Beatrice area residents observed Memorial Day with an outdoor ceremony held during the morning at Evergreen Home Cemetery. Periods of rain held off to allow the annual observance to go forward.
Each year, it is organized by the Gage County Veterans Service Organization with assistance from various military service branches and auxiliaries.
Major General Daryl Bohac, the Adjutant General with the Nebraska National Guard, gave the day's address, saying we have a duty as a nation to be ever mindful of those who fell on battlefields in far-away places.

Bohac said there are more than 16,000 service members who remain unaccounted for, from the Vietnam war…eight-thousand from Korea…. well over 73,000 from World War Two. He said the nation must not rest until all come home.
The Adjutant General told those attending that the world is a very dynamic and dangerous place, where others would do harm to the U.S. and its' way of life.
