FREMONT, NE - (News Channel Nebraska) - Seven rescuers are recovering after their boats capsized while trying to reach stranded residents in Dodge County.
It happened just after 9 PM Thursday about four miles east of Fremont along the Elkhorn River.
Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen says two airboats were en route to a residence that told authorities they were stranded and their basement walls were beginning to collapse. Both boats capsized sending seven rescuers into the flood waters.
They were rescued after nearly an hour in the water by National Guard helicopters and treated for hypothermia. Sheriff Hespen says the stranded residents refused transport from the helicopter. He did not have an update on their condition or the condition of their home.
