BEATRICE - A Utah author will focus on homesteading in the modern west, this Sunday. Brian Cannon will give a presentation at the Homestead National Monument of America at two. He's written a book…."Reopening the Frontier: Homesteading in the Modern West".
Park Ranger Susan Cook says the Homesteading Act didn't end until 1986, and Cannon, a Brigham Young University Professor, will talk about that.

Cook says some land that was marginal for farming could be homesteaded, and also served to provide water across the west.

Saturday, April 20th, is a day-long program encouraging people to become a citizen-scientist. It begins at eight a.m. with a bird walk on the monument's prairie.

Citizen science topics will include entomology, plants, water quality and ornithology, in the transition from winter to spring. Cook says one example of a Homestead National Monument science project started last year.

On April 20th, the citizen science booths and activities will be from ten a.m. until four p.m. Various organizations will have booths at the Education Center and courtyard. Activities are for all ages.
