Evacuations in Pierce, Authorities Say No Threat to Levee

PIERCE, NE - Some residents of Pierce are being asked to evacuate their homes and head to the City Auditorium.
The City of Pierce issued a mandatory evacuation notice around 6:45 PM Friday for the section of town east of Wood Street from Main Street south to Willow Street. Officials ask residents to relocate to the City Auditorium with toiletries, blankets, pillows and non-perishable food items. They also request people bring any medication they need.
Authorities tell NCN the evacuation was ordered because of rising water levels. The National Weather Service says the evacuation is due to existing storm water that has nowhere to go. The Service says there is no threat to the levee.
The North Fork of the Elkhorn River south of Pierce crested at a record 17.56 feet on Wednesday night. It was last measured at 15.39 feet on Friday night. The current river level is in “moderate flood stage.”
