2.5-magnitude earthquake reported near Cowles

The USGS says the small quake occurred Thursday afternoon in south-central Nebraska.

COWLES, Neb. — A magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded about 5 kilometers east-southeast of Cowles, Nebraska, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened at 7:15 a.m. Thursday and was about 5 kilometers below the surface, according to the USGS.

According to the USGS, earthquakes of this magnitude are typically not widely felt and rarely cause damage.

The small quake comes less than two weeks after a stronger earthquake shook parts of south-central Nebraska. On March 1, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded near the same area and was felt in several communities across the region.
