HASTINGS, Neb. — The airport is receiving $4 million in federal funding, a piece of over $60 million in funding to support critical infrastructure projects and firefighting capabilities across Nebraska.

Hastings Airport Manager Matthew Kuhr says the current system is over 30 years old and they’ve been having to find temporary fixes for items like breakers and regulators. Kuhr says he’s been working on receiving funds for the last couple of years.

“We’ve kept it going, but the government realized how critical our situation was and it’s not unique to us specifically. There are a lot of airfields cross the United States with aging system so that’s why federal money is so critical to keep everything going in and to keep our airport system active and moving forward”

The funds will cover a full transition to an LED system that will be more visible and easier to maintain.

The airport is now working with engineers to map out the scope of work. Kuhr adds the FAA will be out soon as well to review the plans. Once the scope of work is approved by the FAA, they can start piecing together plans for construction.
