Columbus Aims to Revamp Howard Boulevard with U.S. transportation BUILD Grant
Columbus is applying for a BUILD grant to revamp Howard Boulevard, aiming to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety near schools and churches
COLUMBUS, NE - In a proactive move to address critical infrastructure needs, the city of Columbus is applying for a significant portion of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) $1.6 billion Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program.
Identified through Columbus's 2024 Safe Streets for All study, the city is now seeking over a million dollars to overhaul Howard Boulevard, a key roadway.
The DOT's 2026 BUILD grants are designed to support smaller municipalities in tackling essential infrastructure projects. Columbus is hoping to leverage this opportunity to enhance Howard Boulevard, stretching from 33rd Avenue and Highway 30 to 23rd Street and Highway 81.
The proposed renovations include targeted improvements at the intersections of 23rd Street and 33rd Avenue, aiming to modernize the area and improve traffic flow.
"It's going to be close to a full renovation to enhance safer travel and also better safety for pedestrians," stated City of Columbus Director of General Services Betsy Eckhardt.
Highlighting the importance of the project, Eckhardt noted, "Because there are three schools in that area, a couple of larger churches, and restaurants, being able to provide safer access is really important." The grant would enable Columbus to address these safety concerns and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment along this vital corridor.
