NORFOLK, Neb. — A grass fire drew a response from several different departments Thursday afternoon in northeast Nebraska.

It started around 1:45 northeast of Norfolk’s Woodland Park neighborhood near the intersection of Highway 35 and 560th Avenue. At least four tankers lined up along County Road 844 to refuel fire crews as they battled wind-driven flames for about two hours.

Flames approached one structure but were extinguished before causing damage.

Hoskins Fire Chief Adam Behmer says a preliminary investigation determined that area residents were burning materials behind their home and the fire got away from them.

Fire crews from Norfolk, Hoskins, Hadar and Stanton responded, along with local volunteers.
