Hastings Fire Department responds to house fire Monday

HASTINGS, Neb. - Fire and rescue teams responded to an accidental structure fire Monday around noon in South Hastings.
According to fire officials the blaze was deemed accidental and started when cardboard boxes were left on an electric stovetop in the kitchen.
The residents were in the process of moving in at 521 S. Boston Ave. and were not home at the time.
A male resident returned to find the home filled with smoke and attempted to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher.
However the fire had grown large enough that Hastings fire and rescue needed to establish a water line to control the blaze.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated the man and no injuries were reported.
The house is considered salvageable, but is currently uninhabitable.
