GOTHENBURG, Neb. (KNOP) - A Gothenburg couple is dead after a crash in Dawson County on Monday.

Gothenburg police, deputies and emergency personnel along with the Nebraska State Patrol were called to the area of Lakeview Drive and Highway 47 shortly after 8:10 a.m. for a report of a wrecked vehicle in the Nebraska Public Power District Canal.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered two people deceased inside the vehicle. The Gothenburg Police Department identified the driver as Jesse Magana, 70, and his passenger, his wife, as Annette Magana, 65.

An investigation determined the two were westbound on 27th Street at 11 p.m. on Sunday, crossed Highway 47 and then hit the north canal head-on, police said. The vehicle slid down into the dry canal where it remained until it was discovered.

Authorities believe the victims were not wearing their seatbelts and suspect speed and alcohol played a factor in the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation.

The Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Top Notch Towing, Dawson County Attorney and Blase Strauser Memorial Chapel assisted in the investigation.
