UNK water main break disrupts service; quick repairs restore water access
KEARNEY, Neb. — As if there wasn’t enough to worry about on the first day of classes, students and staff at the University of Nebraska-Kearney had to deal with an additional disruption on the school’s opening day.
A UNK spokesman says a water main broke early Monday morning near Cope Fountain in the middle of campus. The break affected water service to Randall Hall (a residence hall), the Memorial Student Affairs Building and Calvin T. Ryan Library.
The break left about 150 students and several employees without full water service for most of Monday and part of Tuesday. Students in Randall Hall could still use sinks and restrooms and were allowed to use showers in nearby Mantor Hall. The break entirely disrupted water service in the student affairs and library buildings, which required people to use restrooms in different buildings.
The break happened in a six-inch line running from 9th Ave. to University Drive. Crews completed repairs on Tuesday. They flushed lines and had service fully restored by late afternoon.
