Autopsy ordered in death of girl pulled from Hastings Aquacourt
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - An autopsy has been ordered for a 13-year-old girl who died following a near drowning incident at the Hastings Aquacourt.
The girl was one of a number of Japanese students visiting Hastings last week under a program run by the Hastings International Exchange organization.
She had to be pulled from the deep end of the Aquacourt pool last Wednesday.
She was taken to Mary Lanning Healthcare and later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. The exchange organization reported that she died early Sunday morning.
Hastings Police Chief Adam Story said the Douglas County Attorney’s office ordered an autopsy on the girl’s body. The results of that autopsy were not available as of Monday afternoon.
In a news release, the Hastings International Exchange Organization expressed its condolences to the girl’s family and friends.
“We also hope that citizens of Ozu, including the students who traveled to Hastings, and those who witnessed the events can find the strength to heal from this tragedy,” the statement read.
A spokesperson from HIE said the group has since returned to Japan.
She added that the community has been very empathic and generous during this tragic time.
Hastings Mayor Corey Stutte Monday also offered his and the city’s condolences:
“On behalf of the City of Hastings and the other organizations involved in our sister-city relationship, I would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and community of Ozu for the recent loss of your valued community member. We stand with you during this difficult time and hope for strength as you grieve this difficult loss. Also, I appreciate how Aquacourt staff handled the situation, and appreciate the generosity and support of the Hastings-area community through this process.”
The Hastings Aquacourt announced last week that they will remain closed for the rest of the season.
