GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A master plan for the parks in Grand Island is in the works and the department is asking for the community’s opinion.

According to Parks and Rec Director Todd McCoy, the department is planning for the future of the entire park system in Grand Island. City staff held a public open house Tuesday afternoon.

McCoy said it's important for the community to be involved.

“We want to know if you know how to spend our dollars, you know in the future," said McCoy. "So we have to plan budgets you know it takes you know years of planning to plan for projects and it’s nice to know what the community wants to see so this type of meetings are very helpful to get public input.”

McCoy said the department is planning for the next 20 years. There are over 34 parks and mini parks covering over 437 acres.

The public’s input will help not only to develop the master plan but also for future grant applications.

The department will hold another public open house later this summer.
