KIMBALL -- The Kimball Jr./Sr. High School students competed at the Best in the West on Tuesday.

The Best in the West is a track meet of the region's best student athletes. Only the top 8 athletes are picked to race in each event. The region includes schools from western Nebraska to eastern Wyoming.

“It is quite an accomplishment to get the invitation to compete at this event,” said High School Track Team Head Coach Tiffany Johnson. “You need to be one of the better individuals in the region to be able to run.”

Trevor Fuss set a new school record and personal record going 14' 6" to secure first place in the pole vault. Peter Russell went 13' 6" to earn second.

Derek Russell was the only freshman to compete in the boys’ shot or discus. He threw a new personal best in the discus to come in fourth with a throw of 137' 11" and came in ninth place in the shot put with a throw of 44' 8.5".

Braxton Miller ran sixth place in the 1600 meter with a new personal best of 5:01.

Addisyn Olson jumped 32' 11" in triple jump to earn third place. She cleared 4' 10" in the high jump to earn sixth.

Rachel Berger cleared 8'0" in the pole vault, coming in ninth.

Wyatt Cords competed in the discus; however, he didn't have the afternoon he wanted. The 4x400 relay team of Jacob Wendt, Trevor Fuss, Braxton Miller, and Noe Trevino didn't run as well as they hoped, coming in eighth with a time of 3:50.

Johnson told her athletes even if they didn’t perform as well as they hoped, they should still feel honored that they got that far because that was a huge accomplishment.

Twenty-four Jr. High student athletes also made the finals, with JaLeigh Bohac and Breckyn Kiefer making the top 3 in their prospective sports.

Bohac took home first place in discus with a throw of 105’ 5’’ while Kiefer came in second in pole vault going 7’ 6’’.
