GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A central Nebraska fire department is receiving a new technology to improve traffic safety and protect first responders.

In a news release on Thursday, the city of Grand Island announced that in an effort to improve traffic safety and protect first responders, the Grand Island Fire Department is now integrating HAAS Alert's Safety Cloud® digital alert into its fire equipment.

Officials said this collision prevention service would allow real-time alerts to be sent to Nebraska drivers when emergency services are active nearby and will effectively enhance the light bars and sirens with additional in-vehicle notifications.

The news release said this measure has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of collision by up to 90%, protecting both first responders and the drivers.

"Adopting Safety Cloud adds a layer of protection for our firefighters, facilitating their operations more safely," said Jared Stockwell, Public Information Officer for the Grand Island Fire Department. "By giving drivers additional time to respond appropriately "This service establishes a safer environment for both our team and surrounding motorists."
