KEARNEY, Neb. — A Chicago man is behind bars on several charges thanks in part to automated license plate readers in Kearney.
The Kearney Police Department says its Flock system notified officers of a stolen vehicle at a local gas station on Thursday afternoon. The Flock system is a series of cameras set up around the city that automatically reads license plates and notifies police when it sees certain plate numbers.
A news release says officers contacted the driver of the stolen vehicle, 25-year-old Wikeman Alexander Perez-Perez, and he attempted to flee on foot. After a brief struggle, officers arrested him for possession of stolen property, criminal impersonation, obstructing an officer, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting an officer.
After investigating, officers discovered the vehicle was stolen during an armed robbery in Denver. Police say officers found multiple loaded handguns, several stolen and fake identification documents and other stolen property in the vehicle.
Local investigators are working with Denver Police and the Department of Homeland Security on the incident.
