GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Students in central Nebraska are learning about opportunities to give back to their community.

The Multicultural Resource Center on the Grand Island campus of Central Community College hosted its first ever volunteer fair on Thursday.

Graphic design specialist Emily Klimek said volunteering not only benefits students, but also the community.

“I think that community involvement is only going to strengthen your view and value of where you live," Klimek said. "When you’re involved with your community then you want to, you know, you want to be a part of it and and then in turn you know what’s going on, you’re more aware of what’s happening, you take more pride.”

The Literacy Council, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the YWCA were among the nonprofits in attendance.

The fair is meant to honor the mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Next year, they plan to have more volunteer organizations at the event.
