GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A new non-profit central Nebraska museum is reaching another important milestone.

The Grand Island Children’s Museum has officially found a home. According to board president Kelly Henry, the board has finalized the lease agreement with the city for the old armory building on Old Potash Highway next to Ryder Park.

“That is something the city council had passed," Henry said. "We had talked to the city council about it a couple of times the last couple of years and with our grant award from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development they felt it was appropriate to execute the lease."

She said they will lease it for a nominal amount every year for up to 30 years with a buyout option.

The museum board members will spend next year fundraising to match the $5 million they received from a grant program. They will be partnering with the Greater Grand Island Foundation to assist with collection of the money.

Henry said they are looking forward to starting with the next phase.

“We feel great about it, we are excited to be able to move forward with all our design plans," said Henry. "So, we’re working with CMBA here locally, a local architect, and also Chief Construction. We’re working with both of them to kind of really hone in on the costs.

The building will be remodeled and she’s hoping construction will start during the summer.

She said they are also looking into renaming the museum to encompass everyone, not just children.

The museum will be announcing its new executive director soon.
