GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- An elementary school that has been under construction since March at Grand Island Central Catholic is on track to welcome students in 2024.

According to Foundation Executive Director Jolene Wojcik, everything is going smoothly, construction is on schedule, and they will be ready to open the building’s doors in the fall.

“It was such an unknown when we did the groundbreaking, so there was a little bit of nervousness like how’s this all going to work and is it really happening?" Wojcik said. "And now, when you see the building going up with the students and teachers here, it gets them pretty excited about it."

The elementary school will add 27,000 square feet of space and it will include a new atrium, office space, playground space, and more.

“Right now, they are actually interviewing teachers, we’ve also hired some already, and hired our new principal," Wojcik said. "So all of that is being done so that we’re ready to go for next fall.”

Wojcik says they are also on track with the fundraising efforts. The goal is to raise $11 million to fund the addition and to help establish the Bishop Golka Legacy Fund, which will help create scholarships.

Applications for the elementary school are already being accepted and there are scholarships available for those who might need them.

Construction is set to finish during the summer of 2024 and classes set to start fall of 2024.
