Central Nebraska authorities investigating suspicious call
HASTINGS, Neb. -- Authorities in central Nebraska said they received a call on an alleged active shooter.
The Hastings Police Department said they received a call at the Hastings 911 Center as a teacher in a specific room at the Hastings High School.
It was reported that the 911 center was immediately suspicious as the name of the teacher and the room number do not exist.
HPD said the caller reported that there was an active shooter at the high school.
It was reported that the school resource officer was in the school at this time and all other HPD officers were dispatched to the school.
Officials said the school was immediately placed into the lockdown procedure.
Authorities said that due to the nature of the call, all HPD staff are going room to room in the building to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
HPS Administration and HPD Administration said they are woking together to notify students, parents, and members of the public on the factual information.
HPD said they will conduct an investigation into the call.
Authorities said there will be a high presence of police officers at the school to monitor the safety of all students and staff members as well as answer questions.
At this time, HPD said there is no credible threat at Hastings High School.
Kearney Public High School also received a call for an alleged active shooter Thursday.
Buffalo County Communications Center said that got a call around 6:53 a.m. reporting a shooting at KHS.
The Kearney Police Department said they were dispatched to the school along with the School Resource Officer who was already in the building and immediately confirmed the call was a hoax.
Authorities said a trend of hoax active shooter calls have been hitting 911 call centers this week.
Officials said the call is typically a male of Middle Eastern descent and claims to be in a school building witnessing a shooting.
The calls have been unsubstantiated, according to authorities.
As with any threat involving schools, KPD said they are working closely with KPS and will investigate and respond to all threats per their standard response protocol.
All KPS students and staff at the schools are safe, police said, and no learning has been disrupted and business is operating as usual.
