GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A Grand Island man will spend the rest of his life in prison. 

According to court documents, 28-year-old Tyler M. Manka was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for a kidnapping conviction.

The judge also sentenced him to at least 110 years for burglary, terroristic threats, escape, resisting arrest, and obstruction and two counts of weapons violations. 

The events occurred on March 25, 2022 when Manka escaped while in custody of the Hall County Department of Corrections and then took a man hostage.

According to records, Manka was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and he escaped. He then broke into an apartment and took the owner as a hostage. 

The Grand Island Police Department Tactical Response team, negotiators, Hall County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol were involved in the incident which took several hours. 

The hostage was safe and Manka was taken into custody.

Manka had already been convicted for several crimes and had already served less than a year in prison. He had initially been convicted for distributing controlled substances, carrying a concealed weapon, reckless driving and several other offenses.
