GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The Grand Island Woman’s Club is raising funds to maintain the historic house it owns.
The Hargis House is a historic house in Grand Island. Built in 1898 by Andrew M. Hargis, the three-story Queen Anne-styled mansion has had multiple owners throughout the years.
The Woman’s Club purchased it for $17,500 and that’s where they have been meeting ever since.
Club President Sherry Moore said the house is special to her but sadly the house hasn’t been taken care of as it should have.
“I love the house,” Moore said. "I have been a member for a lot of years and during those years we haven’t done much preservation."
Through the years, the Woman’s Club has restored three upstairs rooms and want to continue to update and maintain the house so that the community may use it. This year they have a project in mind.
“Right now our main project is to put on a new roof,” Moore said. "We have a bid that the roof will cost $70,000 and so we’re trying to raise funds for a new roof."
Moore said that they are also in need of more members. Membership is $50 and they meet the second Tuesday of every month at the House. The club supports Christmas Cheer, food pantry, and Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center.
The House can also be rented for graduation, bridal or baby showers, and parties. They also plan to have more open houses where the community is encouraged to take a tour of the house, make donations or buy a miniature version of the Hargis House.
