People staying at Crossroads Mission Avenue in Hastings relocated after sprinkler line break

HASTINGS, NE — Local churches are housing dozens of displaced people after a sprinkler line break at a Hastings homeless shelter has made the building unsafe.
The City of Hastings says fire and rescue workers responded to an alert at Crossroads Mission Avenue around 9:00 Sunday night. Responders found a broken sprinkler line in the building’s main electrical room. The city fire marshal, electrical inspector and other utilities workers determined it is unsafe to provide electricity to the building and power was disconnected.
A social media post from Crossroads Mission Avenue says about 80 residents were forced to evacuate around midnight. The statement says Hastings Evangelical Free Church, Hastings Church of Christ, and Hastings Berean Fellowship are hosting the displaced people. Each location is fully staffed and has 24-hour security. Catholic Social Services provided sack lunches for everyone and an anonymous person is providing another meal.
Crossroads Mission Avenue says it needs toiletries, towels, and snack foods. People interested in helping can call or text Executive Director Daniel Buller at 307-921-8657 or go to either of the three churches.
Electrical professionals are working at the shelter to make repairs but it could take multiple days for it to be safe to move back in.
