Ricketts supports overturning Roe, suggests special session is possible
Nebraska's governor is weighing in on the leaked Supreme Court draft that suggests Roe vs. Wade will be overturned.
KEARNEY, NE - Nebraska's governor is weighing in on the leaked Supreme Court draft that suggests Roe vs. Wade will be overturned.
Republican Pete Ricketts says he is 100 percent in favor of overturning the Roe verdict.
"The Supreme Court has a historic opportunity to overturn what was really a bad ruling nearly 50 years ago and return the ability to regulate abortion back to the states," Ricketts said. "I will be praying that that's what the Supreme Court does. If it were to do that, then here in Nebraska we would be looking to take steps to do more to protect preborn babies."
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem says she will immediately call a special session when the court decision is final. Ricketts wouldn't guarantee that Nebraska would call a special session, but suggested it's likely.
"We will have to wait and see what exactly what the Supreme Court rules, but then I would expect that I'll be working with Speaker Hilgers' office and the Unicameral with regard to what the next steps after that would be," Ricketts said.
Ricketts also criticized the leaking of the document. He called it a horrible precedent and said it undermines our republic.
