ELWOOD, Neb. -- A central Nebraska fire chief was laid to rest Wednesday morning.

Funeral services for Elwood Fire Chief Darren Krull were held following his death in the line of duty less than a week ago.

Krull was killed during a crash on Highway 283, north of Arapahoe. The Nebraska State Patrol said the 54-year-old was in a vehicle that struck by another emergency vehicle while assisting in the fire response southeast of Elwood.

The community honored Krull at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood Wednesday morning, with burial held at Hanover Cemetery near Glenvil.

On Monday, Krull's body was transported from the Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home in Hastings back to Elwood ahead of his service.

First responders helped lead his hearse out of town.

Flags were ordered to fly at half-staff on Wednesday to honor his passing.
