GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island Fire Department said new information has come to light regarding a garage fire late last month.

Back on Jan. 30, Grand Island Fire responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of West Louise Street.

The fire was in a detached garage, which was later deemed a total loss.

Division Chief Tim Hiemer said there was heavy damage to the garage and siding to the home as well as damage to a neighboring house.

Days following the fire, Grand Island Fire said they believed the cause of the fire was an improperly extinguished recreational fire pit that was being used earlier in the day.

Now, Hiemer said with new information, they believe the fire is suspicious.

This led to Grand Island Fire to turn the investigation over to Grand Island Police to further investigate it as a possible arson.
