SIDNEY - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Sidney.

City of Sidney employees added wreaths to the city's light poles throughout downtown, tested Christmas lights along the top of the downtown buildings, and decorated the pine trees at Hickory Street and 10th Ave in preparation for the city's Christmas kickoff event on Friday.

Sidney Regional Medical Center and the Cheyenne County Chamber are hosting "Holidays at Hickory Square."

"This event has honestly been going on since I can remember," Cheyenne County Chamber President McKailie Carnahan-Kuhns said. "I remember going down as a kid. We're just super pumped for it. It looks like we're going to have great weather, which is also exciting."

The forecast Friday calls for clear skies, and a high of 58 and a low of 30.

Holidays at Hickory Square begins at 3:30 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus and his reindeer, thanks to Viaero Wireless. Kids will have the opportunity to meet Santa and pet the reindeer until 5:45 p.m.

"I'm, honestly, most excited for the live reindeer, because I've never seen a reindeer." Carnahan-Kuhns said. "We've never actually had that as part of this event, so I think that'll be a great addition."

The lights on the trees and the downtown decorations will be lit at 5:45 p.m., followed by the parade of lights along Illinois Street from 12 Ave. to 8th Ave. at 6 p.m.

PlainsWest CASA will be raising money for their organization by serving chili, cinnamon rolls and water for $5 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Candle light tours will be available at the Sidney museum and Post Commanders home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

987 The Big Boy will broadcast live from Hickory Street Square from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
