WILBER, NE — The woman convicted of the killing and dismemberment of Sydney Loofe will be sentenced on Monday.

A three-judge panel will announce whether 27-year-old Bailey Boswell will spend life in prison or receive the death penalty for her first-degree murder conviction.

The judges, led by presiding Saline County District Court Judge Vicky Johnson, oversaw three days of aggravation and mitigation hearings in June. The State argued that Boswell deserves the death penalty because her role in the slaying was “especially depraved and heinous.” The defense listed several mitigating factors, the most emotional being Boswell’s own plea for a life sentence so she can have a role in her daughter’s life. The panel will decide whether the aggravating factor outweighs the mitigating circumstances or not. The decision must be unanimous in order for the death penalty to be imposed.

Boswell was convicted of first-degree murder in 2020 in a highly-publicized trial held in Dawson County. She and her co-defendant Aubrey Trail were found guilty of killing 24-year-old Lincoln store clerk Sydney Loofe. Loofe’s remains were found scattered in ditches in rural Clay County weeks after her death in 2017.

Two weeks ago, Johnson denied Boswell’s request to wear civilian clothing at the hearing.

Trail has already been sentenced to death for the crime.

The sentencing hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Saline County Courthouse in Wilber.
