Peru State is in the NAIA District 3 which includes institutions from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The selection is based on athletic ability, academics, and community service/school activities. A college/university sports information director provides the nomination for the various candidates for their respective school and then a district-wide vote is taken. Part of the nomination includes statistical information on the respective team and individual and then no more than five lines of supporting information about each candidate which is limited to 100 characters per line.
