Gering girls wrap up tennis season with top eight finishes

Class B state tennis wraps up with a strong finish by the Bulldogs in singles.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KNEP) - The Gering tennis team wraps up their season with wins on the final day of the Nebraska Class B Girls State Tennis Tournament.

Kristen Whaley (#1 Singles) and Paige Schneider (#2 Singles) both finish the season with top eight finishes.

Whaley earned match wins over Merci Hood (Adams Central) and Paulina Fomicheva (Elkhorn) on Friday to finish 5th in the state in #1 Singles. Meena Satpathy of Omaha Duchesne Academy took home the state title in #1 Singles.

Schneider finished her season with a 1-1 finish in #2 Singles on Friday. Schneider opened day two action with a close loss to Ayonya Birthi of Grand Island Central Catholic. But she would rebound to defeat Eva Behlen of Bennington to finish 7th in the state. Madeline Starr of Norris took home the state title in #2 Singles.

Omaha Duchesne Academy took home the state team title in Class B with 54.25 points over the two days. Gering earned a tenth place finish with 15.125 points for the two days. Scottsbluff took 18th with a 6 points and Alliance finished with a no score.
