BEATRICE, NE — A new season means new courts for the Beatrice tennis team.

New court surfaces were installed at the end of July on the two sets of courts at Hannibal Park.  Beatrice head coach Karen Dittbrenner says the seams in the concrete on the top two courts had cracks in them. This allowed water to get underneath the surface and lift the courts. She says varsity players couldn’t use those courts because it wasn’t a fair setting.

“Then we began to see some of the same things happening down between courts one and two," Dittbrenner said.  "They were starting to lift too.”

Dittbrenner says the privilege to play on the new surfaces isn’t lost on the team.

“These kids, they’re appreciative," Dittbrenner said. "They realize that it’s not very often that you get the chance to play on such a nice facility.”

The boys tennis team held its first practice on Monday.

The team's season preview story will be published Wednesday.
