LINCOLN - State officials are working to breakdown all of the states coronavirus case data by race in an effort to better serve at-risk populations.

Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services CEO Dannette Smith says some of the findings were startling when looking at the large percentage of COVID-19 cases and deaths certain minorities accounted for.

"We have data that shows how many Latinos are in our community yet the volume of them going to the hospital is at like 46 or 48-percent. The number of African Americans who are here in Nebraska we show a rate of about seven-percent of them being involved in the hospital. Those are things that are staggering because what that says is that there's some disparity in how people are accessing healthcare."

Smith said the state is about 70-percent of the way though breaking down all of the states data and will be all the way through by the end of June when it will post the racial breakdown on the state's coronavirus dashboard.
