Raikes talks campaign, priorities, if elected
Raikes said she feels her campaign was still able to accomplish some things.
ASHLAND - In the race for District 23 in the Nebraska Legislature, Sen. Bruce Bostelman led challenger Helen Raikes by more than 60 percent of the vote with all 33 precincts reporting.
Raikes ran as an independent in the primary.
Like her opponent, she also prioritizes property tax relief. However, she said Bostelman has failed to take a leadership role on that issue.
“He hasn’t spoken up," Raikes said. "He hasn’t introduced a bill and even voted against some things that would have brought relief.
"I feel like with my backgrounds in both agriculture and education, that I can take the leadership and find a win-win solution across property tax and education.”
Raikes said she feels her campaign was still able to accomplish some things, like forming some partnerships that helped create resources for folks in Colfax County they might otherwise not have had.
"We have worked to bring resources to particularly our hispanic families there who were affected by the COVID virus," she said. "Many of our constituents chipped in and contributed face masks.”
Raikes is still on the ballot for District 23 this November.
