Ord Survives Comeback Attempt By Cozad For First Victory Of The Season
ORD - While it certainly didn't come easily, the Ord Chanticleers are celebrating their first victory of the season after defeating Cozad 46-42.
The Ord defense was stifling throughout the first half, holding Cozad to just 10 points while jumping ahead 24-10. Cozad would make things a little more interesting in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter, as Ord's lead was cut to six multiple times throughout the frame.
Timely baskets from Nolan Wetovick and clutch three-pointers from Tag Sassali kept Cozad in the game, but the the Haymakers were unable to overcome the early deficit they faced. A key three-pointer and a handful of late free throws from Gage Smith helped the Chanticleers close out their first win of the year.
Ord was paced by senior Reese Davenport with 12 points, while Smith added 11 and sophomore Johnny Deriso chipped in 9. Cozad was lead by sophomore Nolan Wetovick with 16 points, and fellow sophomore Jacob Weatherly scored 8 points in the loss.
Ord improved to 1-6 with the victory, and will try and build on Tuesday's win in their next game against Gibbon on Friday. Cozad has now lost four straight games, and will attempt to rebound at home on Friday against Ogallala.
