Heavy rain today, heavy snow overnight for northeast Nebraska
Forecasters with the National Weather Service say the winter storm hitting the state will drop rain before snow in eastern Nebraska.
NORFOLK, NE -- Forecasters with the National Weather Service say the winter storm hitting the state will drop rain before snow in eastern Nebraska.
As of 6:00 a.m., 0.31 inches of rain had already fallen in Norfolk, breaking the previous daily record of 0.29 in 1948. And the rain is just starting. The NWS says 1-2 more inches of rain could fall the rest of the day.
Impacts of the heavy rainfall could be increased runoff due to some frozen ground, possible flooding, travel delays due to wet roads and reduced visibility.
The snow and ice are predicted to hit northeast Nebraska overnight. Up to 0.1 inches of ice and around six inches of snow are forecast for some parts of the region. Neligh is expected to get 6-8 inches and Niobrara is forecast to receive 8-12 inches. Cities further east aren't expected to get more than four inches of snow.
Snow and ice is expected to be at its worst from midnight to 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
