NDOT Preparing For Tuesday Winter Storm
The Nebraska Department of Transportation is preparing to combat the winter weather which is expected to hit the state on Tuesday.
NORFOLK - The Nebraska Department of Transportation is preparing its fleet of vehicles to combat Tuesday's winter weather.
Norfolk Maintenance Supervisor Chris Tuttle says brine trucks will be out in the early morning hours to prevent roads from becoming too slick.
"They're calling for ice starting tomorrow, so hopefully we can get out and get on top of it before the ice sticks down," Tuttle said. "If we know a storm is coming we try to be on the road by 4:00 AM, but sometimes it's tough because a truck might not start, but most of the time we're out on the road by at least 4:30 AM."
A new vehicle will also be in use in the Norfolk area, as a tow plow will be used for the first time this season. Tuttle says the plow is designed for four lane roadways and interstates, and will allow his crews to do more with less.
"This basically will take up another truck, and in theory it should work great, as long as we can keep the traveling public behind us and nobody gets anxious," Tuttle said.
And as the winter weather commences throughout the day Tuesday, Tuttle is asking travelers to drive patiently, not only because of the conditions, but also to avoid any accidents with snow-removal vehicles.
"Our trucks can only go so fast, so you just have to give us a little bit of time and be patient," Tuttle said. "We're just out there trying to get everybody to their destination safely, and my suggestion is for drivers to take their time, be patient, and be safe."
