HEBRON - One of the most popular hunting seasons in the state of Nebraska is opening this weekend.
The November firearm season for deer in Nebraska starts Nov. 16 and runs through Nov. 24. Conservation officer Matt Taylor, who covers Thayer, Jefferson and Fillmore counties, says this is usually one of the busiest, if not the busiest hunting season in the state.
"It's one of those that has a lot of tradition around it," he said. "A lot of people seem to get out and enjoy it."
As with any hunting season, Taylor says safety is the top priority. That starts with proper muzzle control.
"Know where your gun is pointed at all times," Taylor said. "Don't pull the trigger on anything you're not willing to take down."
Last season, there was a handful of poached deer reported in Thayer County. Taylor said he's had a couple of reports again this fall, including a poached deer that was found three miles north of Fairbury on River Road.
"Sadly, it's fairly common," Taylor said on poaching. "I'd encourage the public to call me with any questions or concerns of anything going on. Try to get a license plate (number). That's usually the best way to help us out."
Taylor can be reached at 402-200-9597. As for deer population, Taylor expects most hunters to have success with warmer temperatures and more of the corn crop being harvested.
"It should be a good year, and I hope that everyone's safe."
Archery season for deer in Nebraska opened Sept. 1 and is open until Dec. 31. Muzzleloader season for deer is Dec. 1-31.
