SOUTH SIOUX CITY - Officials say over 60 pounds of explosive material was found while cleaning out a home in South Sioux City on Saturday.

Around 3:00 PM, the South Sioux City Fire Department began evacuating homes in the 300 block of W. 18th Street due to the discovery of a house containing dangerous energetic materials. A bomb squad from Lincoln was called in to assist at the scene, and the compounds were disposed of later in the evening.

Officials with the SSCFD say the materials had been inside the house for around ten years without anyone's knowledge. The SSCFD have not said what the materials exactly were, but did say they were explosive and used for creating fireworks.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes around 10:00 PM.
