The other driver killed Thursday in the three-vehicle crash that killed Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Jerry Smith was identified Friday by the patrol.

Derek Lacrete, 28, of Lewellen, was killed when he was ejected from his 2005 Mazda Tribute, the patrol said.

The crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. MDT on U.S. Highway 26 west of Bridgeport in the Nebraska Panhandle.

The patrol said a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by MaryJo Decora, 60, of Bridgeport, was stopped on the highway because Decora was waiting to make a left turn into the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery. Her pickup was struck from behind by the Mazda driven by Lacrete.

The Mazda hit the back, driver’s side of Decora’s vehicle, causing the Mazda to veer into the oncoming lane. There, it collided head-on with Smith's patrol car, a 2016 Dodge Charger, the patrol said.

Smith, 51, of Scottsbluff, and Lacrete were pronounced dead at the scene. Decora was not seriously injured and was not taken to the hospital.
