Sinkhole Shuts Down Wymore City Street
WYMORE - The relentless rain, runoff and ground moisture has caused its share of flooding problems in the Midwest. Now, the wet conditions have shown up in another way….a sinkhole in Wymore.
The cave-in, about eight-to-ten feet across, is located on the westbound lane of "G" street between 4th and 5th, in the east part of Wymore. Utility crews have the street blocked off to traffic. The sinkhole is near an entrance to the Wymore Fertilizer Company. It appears to be nearly ten feet deep and opened on Saturday.
Wymore Assistant Fire Chief Mark Meints says several people, including himself, have been battling water issues in basements over the past four days.
He says the water table is high and city officials say the storm sewer system is running at over capacity. A Wymore city official said the sinkhole is near a crest in the street where an old railroad line once ran through.
Meints was told by Interim Public Works Director Tim Sedlacek that a storm sewer is located underneath the damaged area. A much smaller hole was also found about a block west.
The good news is that no one was injured or had their vehicle damaged.
The bad news is….more rain is in the forecast.
