Council discusses vets home property during study session

By News Channel NebraskaGRAND ISLAND, NE (Omaha World-Herald News Source) - There is no shortage of ideas to redevelop the Grand Island Veterans Home campus property.
What is in question is how to finance those plans.
The Grand Island City Council gave an update on the redevelopment of the 48 acres the campus is located on during a Tuesday study session.
All but 58 of the 640 acres of the veterans home property was transferred to the city in 2015 when it was decided to build the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney.
The veterans cemetery and campus property, though, has remained owned by the state. The city is waiting for the state's approval on a memorandum of agreement for the transfer of the cemetery. When that happens, the city will care and maintain it, which will likely cost over $26,000 annually.
